This week, our Video Of The Week, goes to Cliff Wheeler’s new release, “Sober Again”. The song is a soulful and poignant reminder of the all-to-familiar struggle with addiction. We asked Cliff how he came to write the song. “I got up early one morning, made coffee and got out my guitar and phone,” he said. “I keep notes for song ideas on my phone, and when I opened the notes app, two words popped up – Sober Again. Fifteen minutes later the song was complete.”
North Carolina’s Cliff Wheeler, has been playing music for the better part of 40 years. Most recently, leading his band of brothers, the Cliff Wheeler Band, they’ve released two albums so far- Wheeler in 2017 and To The Bone in 2018.
The Cliff Wheeler Band is Cliff Wheeler – lead guitar/acoustic guitar/vocals, Gary Orlando – lead guitar, Garrett Wheeler – bass guitar, and new addition Johnny Handy – drums. CWB is known for their “southern fried outlaw country” and powerful live shows, so this new song and video release is quite a departure for Wheeler.
The video was filmed at Wheeler’s local American Legion, where he is a member, on an early Sunday morning. “In the video, I’m wearing an Otis Campbell Band t-shirt and the two guys at the end of the bar are the rhythm and lead guitarist in that band – Billy “Maytag” Etheridge and Patrick Hastings,” explains Cliff. Band members, Gary Orlando and Johnny Handy, also make an appearance. The video was filmed and produced by Wheeler’s son, Garrett, who also plays bass for the band.
