Lookout World, Here Comes #VWRadio

This past April, a friend of mine reached out and told me that he knew of two DJs that were looking for a new radio home. I told him I wasn’t planning on launching #VWRadio until later this year, and he told me I should consider doing it sooner.

As skeptical as I was about rearranging my business plan, I was excited about the prospect of starting my own radio station.

My love for radio goes back decades. When I was a teenager, growing up in Denver, Colorado in the 70’s, KIMN was THE radio station to listen to. And of course I loved the fact that the call letters were my name.

During my junior year of high school, we took a field trip to the KIMN radio station, and got to be DJs for the afternoon. I helped alphabetize the vinyl, and even got to introduce a song on air – it was Fleetwood Mac, “Dreams”.

I had been a music lover since I was a toddler, and standing in the studio that day, I knew that’s what I was meant to do. Not long after the radio station field trip, we took a tour of Colorado University at Boulder where I had planned on attending after graduation, and when I toured the school of Broadcast Journalism, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Unfortunately, my Dad was transferred between my junior and senior year, which changed the whole trajectory of my life, and those dreams ended up getting left behind.

I’ve never forgotten that dream though, and I’ve thought about it a lot over the years. And now, 40 years later, here I am with my very own radio station, with a format that will support and promote emerging artists – another longtime passion of mine. Life sure can be awesome sometimes.

It was slow going at first, as I learned the ins and outs of the radio biz, but #VWRadio is now officially licensed directly through these respective performance rights organizations (PROs) – Sound Exchange, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. We will be doing our own reporting for royalties directly to these PROs. This, in addition to the move we are making to Radio.co, has opened up many more exciting opportunities for programming. Here’s the line-up of our new and current shows here at #VWRadio.
